Excursions with overnight stays: ten B&Bs for sweet dreams.

For many excursions in Switzerland, it’s worth travelling for a bit longer by train. If you don’t want to go home on the same day, you can spend the night in a bed and breakfast. Here are ten suggestions that are full of charm and individuality.

1. Casa Archi, Losone (TI).

The house – or, more appropriately, the palace – is situated at the heart of Losone in the Maggia delta. Elisa Savazzi’s family-run business is charmingly authentic and friendly. Casa Archi has good public transport links and is a starting point for cycling and hiking tours. The rooms have WiFi and terraces; breakfast is served in the adjacent barn.

2. Villa Mon Abri, Goldau (SZ).

The first thing you’ll notice is the magnificent park with its ancient trees, covering a total of almost 4,000 m2. Then the art nouveau villa comes into view with its ivy-covered façade. It was built in 1903 by the great-grandfather of current owner and host Erika Goergen. The surrounding area offers some enticing regional and national attractions such as Goldau Landscape and Animal Park, Lake Zug, Mount Rigi and Lucerne.

Excursion idea: Rigi

3. The Bed + Breakfast, Lucerne.

Four women run this establishment with commitment and a great deal of passion. A wonderful garden with seating, eight stylishly renovated rooms – and all just a quarter of an hour away from the centre of Lucerne. Mount Pilatus, the Swiss Museum of Transport, Lake Lucerne etc. await you, almost on the doorstep. A godsend for everyone who wants to enjoy a great overnight stay and a delicious breakfast at a low price.

4. Hotel Piz Linard, Lavin (GR).

Lavin is situated in the Lower Engadine region. The Rhaetian Railway service stops once an hour at the station at 1,430 metres above sea level. The ingredients for the food are sourced locally, while the Arvensaal room dating back to 1926 is an eye-catching and cosy feature – and is sometimes used as a concert hall too.

5. Domaine de Châteauvieux, Satigny (GE).

This is pure luxury: the estate is situated in a small vineyard just outside Geneva. Relaxation and enjoyment are of the utmost importance at this B&B. The kitchen and wine cellar (25,000 bottles!) are beyond compare.

Excursion idea: boat trip on Lake Geneva

6. Thurelle Bertschen, Turtmann (VS).

Built in 1662, this storage tower in Turtmann, at the gateway to the romantic, unspoilt Turtmann Valley, brings culture, history and culinary delights together. This place has largely retained its original character.

7. Brücke 49, Vals (GR).

Brücke 49 in Vals (Grisons) calls itself a home away from home. The building is over one hundred years old and has been renovated in the style of a Danish country house. This oasis, far away from everyday life, offers helpful hosts, free WiFi, a fireplace, seating in the garden and, what’s more, an excellent breakfast with homebaked bread.

Excursion idea: Therme Vals spa: you must book in advance and take confirmation of your stay at the B&B with you to benefit from a cheaper rate.

8. Nühus, Safien Platz (GR).

Nühus is situated above Safien Platz on the Bruschgaleschg sun terrace. The Swiss Heritage Society lists the “new house” among Switzerland’s 91 most beautiful guest houses. The six rooms offer pure relaxation.

Excursion idea: Beverin Nature Park

9. Am Pavillon, Bern.

High-ceilinged rooms with stucco walls and old parquet floors meet modern interior design with an eye for detail. The bed and breakfast is a two-minute walk away from the “wave” of Bern main station.

Excursion idea: Zentrum Paul Klee

10. Godswärgjistubu, Albinen (VS).

In the heart of the traditional Valais village of Albinen, near Leukerbad, the Godswärgjistubu inn is a real gem: the B&B suite features a living room, fireplace, bedroom and bathroom with a double shower. Breakfast, including homebaked authentic spelt bread (Ur-Dinkel) and homemade Godswärgji products, round off your stay.

  1. I will be in Switzerland from September 16, 2015 until November 2, 2015. Can I please get some rates for the B&B, preferably in Valais and Tessin.

    1. Hi Liliane. Please check the rates with the B&Bs. You’ll find the links to their websites in the text. We wish you a nice stay in Switzerland. Best regards, Nadia

  2. In our Godswärgji-Suite we did a little transformation of the bath-room. Instead the plastic steam-shower-cabine we built a “snail-shell-shower-cave” with LED starry sky. And because of the many guest requests (radiation exposure) we removed the WLAN.
    with our best regards
    Godswärgjistubu, Albinen
